This used to be our road...

This is our road -washed out- as for the silly neighbor in the crack of the road... don't try this at home kids.... several people were lost to the river by standing on banks that gave away while they watched the raging rivers...

Hurricane Irene hit New England on Sunday, August 28th... 2011. 260 roads were washed out or washed away, 700 homes washed away, 30 bridges and railways -washed out. Simple Watercolor Studies / Children's Illustrations

As I've been painting through the years, I've begun to play around with making fun, quick color studies or Simple Illustrations as I like to call them. I start first with graphite and water color pencils, and then I add a light wash and/or water color and gouache paint. Each simple illustration was created between 2 - 5 hrs and range between 5" X 7" to 9" x 12" . Here are a few - enjoy!

Here is a brand new watercolor study I did for last week's Illustration Friday theme - Perennial. The flower in this little illustration is a hybrid form of the Anemones, called September Charm. The title of the illustration is The September Charm Fairy, by Christine Mix copyright 2011

Little Trading Cards

Four Artist Sketch/Trading Cards, painted in watercolor/gouache. I thought it would be fun to post the process here - from sketch to finished illustrations. The cards are 2.5" X 3.5" each and were created for Kelly Light's Ripple Fundraiser to help animal and marine victims for the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill, of Summer 2010 - Two of the cards were sold.

Last holiday season, Our Lil' Crit group painted 2.5" X 3.5" trading cards and gave them to each other for holiday gifts. Here are three that I painted. These were so much fun to paint, I think I'll do some more..... Much thanks to Our Lil' Crit Group - you guys and gals rock!

Hard times... most people experience them at least once in a life time, and sometimes more. It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, what religion or political views you hold, what country, city or village you live in, what color you are or how many fingers you have. Hard times come to us all, in many forms. It could be a fire in you apartment building at midnight, that sends you, your family and neighbors out into the streets. You could black out from asthma in the middle of a hot Summer day, and find yourself kissing the pavement with a broken nose. It could come in the form of a job loss, a sudden road rage or a terrorist attack from out of the blue, that could end your life, or that of someone you love. It could be cancer, arthritis and loved ones with alzheimers. Hard times can be ice storms, hurricanes, famine, homelessness, earthquakes, or war. Hard times test our courage, and our ability to survive and to persevere, with that inner knowing, that life is short. Yet, no matter how the hard times effect us, somehow, we carry on.

I remember years ago, while living in Florida, I was painting scenery for theaters, and interior decorators, while I painted and wrote children's illustrations and stories in the wee mornings and late evenings. One day, while painting bookshelves for a private client, my right hand started cramping up. The more I pushed through the weeks to come, the worse it got, so I painted with my left hand. The result was development of chronic tendonitis in both hands. I remember what my hand surgeon told me back then. She said, "From now on, no more large pieces. Stick to those lovely little watercolor paintings you do so well. That's the direction you want to go in.” That year, I lost the complete use of my hands for approximately three to four months and it took nearly a whole year to recover. Luckily I didn't have to go through surgery, but, there was a lot of physical therapy and struggles with everyday life that needed to be overcome.

During that time, I had to drop all of my freelance designer work, and just focus on healing. Luckily I was staying with my sister at the time, while, making the transition to move back to New England. Unfortunately for my sister, my one month visit turned into a one year stay. It had caused a burden for her and her husband, because I wasn't able to work to pay my rent, or even do the simplest house chores. What I was able to do however, according to my doc's instructions, was to manage to paint children's illustrations, five minutes, and eventually, fifteen minutes a day, alternating between both hands. This put a little stress on our relationship, as my sister couldn't understand how I could paint, and not do the dishes.

Life does have it's miracles though, and it pushes us in the direction of our right path, no matter how many obstacles arise. Sometimes miracles arrive in the form of an old lady. My mother introduced me to her wonderful neighbor from Sweden, Deloris Mertens. Deloris was a countess, a composer, and a writer. When she saw my portfolio she asked me to paint a couple of illustrations for a couple of children's stories and songs she had written over the years. After reading the stories and meeting Deloris, I was thoroughly inspired and hopeful again. We knew that it would be a challenge to get the stories published in a world where editors prefer to pick their own illustrators for stories they take on, (and they do so for a good reason). So, we went about it with our eyes open. I did it for the experience of creating a storyboard, a dummy and it added a couple of new paintings to my portfolio. Although we agreed on no payment, Deloris did throw me a little money here and there, throughout the process, we both kept our copyrights, and she let me keep the paintings so I could sell them in the future.

As a result, one of those two illustrations, Silver Harmony, (above), became one of my best selling images and a favorite by the art directors and agents whenever they see my portfolio. Deloris has since passed on, but, her inspiration and beauty lives on in her memory.

Later that Spring, I was painting a dragon on the street at the Lake Worth Side Walk Painting Festival. An older woman was pushing her young grandson in a wheel chair, and they stopped in front of my little square where I was painting. The boy asked me, “Is that a dragon?” I answered, “Yes, his name is Spike.” Then the boy smiled, and he stayed there and starred at the dragon for a little while longer. Before they left, his grandmother said, “Thank you for making him smile. He hasn't smiled in a very long time.” That's when I knew, it was okay. My dream had come to me. Even if I got hit by a mack truck that day, I did my job as a children's illustrator. I made at least one child smile in this world. And that's what it's all about – that's why we need to draw, paint, and create, whatever we need to create.

That year, I learned to pace myself, not to push, and I found a new way to go about painting, writing and to follow that dream career I held so dear, and to never quit. And yes, I did make it back to New England.

There have been several more hard times since then. My father had alzheimers and in the end, colon cancer. Once again, I found painting and writing to be my life preserver, while taking on the role of caregiver for both of my parents. This time that life preserver came in the form of a real children's illustration assignment from an educational publisher, Teacher Ideas Press, from out of the blue. Illustrating Write Out of the Oven! By Josephine Waltz, carried me through.

I remember what my father once told me, “Life is like sailing a boat,” he said, “sometimes when you're out on the sea, a storm comes up and blows you off your course and all you can do is just hang on tight and ride out the storm. And don't worry if you get blown off course, you may find that you've gone somewhere you've never planned to go, but, that's okay. It's like taking a little side trip off of your path, and you learn a few lessons along the way. After you've learned those lessons, then you can get back on course and sail on, with new knowledge you didn't have before.” With my father's words, I've learned to let inspiration act as my lighthouse in a sea of storms.

Dreams don't come easy. By following our dreams, we find that our dreams aren't just about us... they belong to a bigger picture. Whenever we put our creations out there to the public, we're affecting the world around us, and hopefully, making this world a better place, even if it is for only one moment in time.

Chris's Bio and Books

Chris Mix drew, painted, played with clay, wrote poems and stories as a child. She studied art at Coker College, in Hartsville, S.C. for one year and then headed to Florida, where she received an Art Scholarship for painting, at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. While at college, she also studied sculpture, photography, cinematography and theatre arts. It was just after Chris graduated from the University
of South Florida in 1988, with a B.A. in Fine Arts and another B.A. in Mass
Communications, that she painted her first children's illustration in watercolor,
titled "Spike & Wordo's Magical Wish." Hence, Spike the Dragon
was born and Chris realized she had found her niche in art and her future!

She has been painting children's illustrations ever since Spike was originally created. She's also been painting for theaters and interior decorators, private commissions, showing and selling her original illustrations, prints, greeting cards and other gift items through galleries, art shows and designers, in Florida and Vermont, for over 20 years.

Christine's children's illustrations have appeared in several Vermont newspapers, SCBWI's Bulletin in 2005, 2009, 2010 and so far, one children's book;

I've been adding some elements and more shading to this sketch that I started last week.... I was thinking of inking it... but, now I'm not so sure... maybe I'll do just the pencil / photoshop thing.... stay tuned!

I just finished painting this new illustration for the New Year 2012. It also happens to fit in with last week's Illustration Friday theme.... Highlight. Titled Snowy Owl Dreams, (I changed the title from Silent Winter's Eve, below but, then again... ) painted in watercolor by Christine Mix, copyright 2012. Happy New Year to all!

I thought my recent self portrait / new version of the Wicked Witch from Snow White and the Seven Drawfs, would fit in nicely for a recent Illustration Friday theme - Scary. The bottom image is the earlier version, the top image is the new revision... it may still need some tweaking - so, hang in there....

This is a watercolor/gouache image I painted originally for an Illustration Friday theme a month or so ago, (above). It was a quicky at the time and now I'm finally working on the revisions - I think I'll be calling it Lion Magic.. The bottom image is the actual painting scanned, and I played around with photoshop a bit with the top image- adding some mist and perspective - before I add the changes to the painting. Now that Hurricane Irene is over with - Here's the latest revision in-progress of an illustration I've been working on - of Jack and the Beanstalk. We are having scanner issues, so I had to take a picture with my cheap camera for now - and multi - layer it in photoshop to match the actual colors. It still has a long way to go - and a few more details, flowers and other little magical things.... stay tuned... Meanwhile, check out the earlier stages and color study of this illustration below... along with other new images and works in progress.

Here's another revision of my shark and puffer fish - I made the shark larger and played around more in photoshop - and I have another one with the shark even larger - may try to post that too. New Painting in the Works... the top image is multi-layered in photoshop, but bottom is the original scan.. in watercolor.

I had a dream back in the Winter of 2011, around the time my old cat Buster passed away - and this was the image in my dream. I've been painting it for awhile - it's one of those paintings that has no time limits - sometimes an artist has to do this for oneself, and let the painting take you where it takes you. This is titled, Whale's Journey Home, is painted in watercolor and gouache - and is very, very, near finished. I just need to play around a little more with the lighting, illumination and shadows, and a few other magical things - then it's done... stay tuned. ( posted, July 21, 2011.) The bottom image is the painting, scanned in as is, and the top is multi-layered once, on photoshop... I'm playing around with the effects in photoshop before I apply them with paint. I'm almost finished with this illustration - very near I think. It's painted in watercolor and gouache, but, I may play around in photoshop a little for light effects, etc... Meanwhile.... Gardening time has arrived in Vermont - Wahoo!

Here's the latest version of my revision for my illustration of the story Jack and the Beanstalk. Painted in watercolor and gouache. As you can see, I still have more details to add like the stringy vines around the leaves, bean flowers, details on Jack and the water can, and other fun magical things to add. The original quick study I did for this is below... after painting it, I had a dream with a more dramatic perspective - stay tuned for the finished version - hopefully this week. Ahhh, here is a new water color/ gouache painting I am working on. As you can see, I've yet to add some details with waves, water splashes, etc... I've scanned this into my computer and played around with lighting effects - the bottom image is original as scanned, the two top images are where I'm playing around with the brightness and contrast before I continue on... I quickly whipped up this drawing/sketch in pencil and photoshop for last weeks IF theme - Bottled, as well as, for the book dummy of Actias's Porch - (an original PB dummy in progress.) It still needs some work, but, it's one small step at at time.... by Christine Mix copyright 2011.
In the above image of Jack and the Beanstalk, I played around with color values on my wacom over the original water color painting.

In this illustration, (above,) I just simply multipied the layers in photoshop to the original water color painting, to add more depth and saturation.
I've been painting the revision of my Jack and the Beanstalk illo I did for IF a few weeks back. I'm posting the original version scanned, (bottom image) along with a couple of other versions where I've been playing around in photoshop on color value for the beanstalk, before I move on. I'm planning to do this whole image in water color/ gouache, but, I may also take my wacom tablet out and play around as well.... humm - either way, I still have lot's more details to add with leaves, Jack, whispy clouds and stars... fairies,... etc... A good thing to do on a cold rainy day. Happy art to all!. (The 1st version original color study and the original sketch for this image are posted below in last weeks blog. )

Just after I painted the quick water color study for Jack and the Beanstalk a couple of weeks ago for the IF theme, Cultivate, (below), I had a dream that night of the same illustration with a more dramatic perspective. So, I re-sketched it (see above,) and will be painting it this week - along with adding more leaves and other fun magical details... stay tuned! (posted April 6, 2011.) Ahhh, I'm happy to see the New Year and life is getting back to normal after the hectic holidays of 2011. So, for a start - I took the dueling pigs off the back burner and they are rolling along. Stay tuned for the finished version coming soon - as more details have yet to be done on the banjos, add some highlights and other little fun things. The title will be - Dueling Banjo's in the Eve - by Christine Mix, copyright 2010/2011, painted in watercolor/gouache.

Titled, Books and Toys, by Christine Mix, copyright 2011 I just sketched this little drawing in my sketch book for the Illustration Friday theme - Sweater,. I had fun with this one, and maybe, I'll make a color illustration of it -someday.
